African Business Magazine Puts the Spotlight on Institution-Building

In this month's profile for African Business Magazine, our Chairman, Mr Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, CFR, speaks candidly with editor Anver Versi about the difference between entrepreneurial success and institution-building, and why he believes Africa's development challenge is less a shortage of ideas than a shortage of institutions capable of turning them into results. He also reflects on our partnership with the University of Oxford's Blavatnik School of Government, and what leadership development looks like when it is built to outlast any one leader.

One of the convictions that guides our work is that strong public institutions are essential to creating the conditions for sustainable development and private-sector growth. In this profile for African Business, our Chairman reflects on the thinking behind this conviction, drawing on his experience of transforming Access Bank into one of Nigeria's leading financial institutions and the lessons that experience offers for institution-building.

He makes the distinction clear: a business may succeed because it is built by an exceptional leader, but a strong institution is one where excellence is embedded in its systems, culture and people and can endure beyond any individual leader.

This is also at the heart of our approach to public-sector reform. We invest in leaders not simply to make them better leaders, but to equip them to strengthen the institutions they serve. Through leadership development, evidence, practical resources, and a network of reformers, we help public servants turn their capacity to lead into lasting institutional change.
