Raising the Next Generation of Effective Public Sector Leaders: Lateef Jakande Fireside Chat

Public trust is the most valuable currency for any public sector leader. But how can leaders earn and sustain it to create a lasting impact? Our Chairman sat with fellows of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy to dissect this question in a candid conversation on leadership, legacy, and governance.

Each year, fellows of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy meet with our Chairman, Mr Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, CFR, to gain insights from his leadership journey and learn from our work in public sector transformation.

This year, over 30 fellows from the academy engaged him in a fireside conversation on leadership, legacy, and public trust. The discussion examined how trust, purpose, and intention shape leadership across public and private sectors.

Reflecting on the values that shaped Alhaji Lateef Jakande’s impact in public service, our chairman challenged the fellows to consider how belief systems influence leadership outcomes, governance, and public trust. He outlined three essential elements required to build public trust: intent, competence, and consistency. He emphasised that these are non-negotiable qualities for every effective public sector leader.

He also reminded the fellows that public authority is entrusted to leaders to serve others, never for personal gain. He urged them to clearly separate personal interests from public responsibility.

The conversation reflects the Foundation’s continued commitment to empowering ethical and capable public sector leaders across Africa.
