ADHFP Impact Story: Improving Access to Quality Primary Healthcare

In just one year, the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation’s Adopt-A-Healthcare-Facility Programme has turned Idunmwugha PHC in rural Edo State from a struggling clinic into a beacon of hope. Antenatal care visits soared by over 1,200%, childhood immunizations multiplied six-fold, and women no longer risk their lives traveling miles for safe delivery.

Nigeria faces some of the world’s highest rates of maternal and child mortality, with rural communities bearing the brunt of limited healthcare access and under-resourced clinics. In Edo State’s Uhunmwode Local Government Area, the Idunmwugha Primary Health Clinic was once a symbol of these challenges, struggling with dilapidated infrastructure, medicine shortages, and low community trust.

That all changed in 2024, when the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation’s Adopt-A-Healthcare-Facility Programme stepped in. Through targeted investments; renovating wards, equipping maternity units, ensuring steady supplies of vaccines and medicines, and training staff, Idunmwugha PHC experienced a dramatic turnaround. Antenatal care visits increased by over 1,200%, childhood immunizations soared, and for the first time in years, the clinic reported zero maternal and under-five deaths. Community outreach and consistent supervision have restored local confidence, making the clinic a first choice for families .

This transformation is more than just numbers; it shows what is possible when vision meets action.
