Improving Access to Quality Primary Healthcare

Our work in primary healthcare helped drive real, measurable improvements in health outcomes, brought quality health services to tens of thousands of underserved Nigerians, and boosted immunisation, maternal care, and disease treatment in rural communities.

Our primary healthcare initiatives delivered significant gains in health access and outcomes by revitalising facilities, supporting frontline workers, and advancing knowledge sharing across the health sector.

  • In partnership with the Private Sector Health Alliance of Nigeria (PSHAN) and subnational health agencies, the Foundation’s Adopt-A-Healthcare Facility Programme (ADHFP) continued to revitalise primary health centres in Edo State, helping expand access to essential services for more than 50,000 residents in target communities. Our work contributed to dramatic improvements in core health indicators, including immunisation rates increasing by over 1,700%, antenatal visits rising by over 1,200%, and more than 500 children tested and treated for malaria in our supported facilities, while recording zero maternal and under-five deaths in revitalised clinics.

  • Beyond service delivery, we strengthened institutions and systems by convening and participating in high-level dialogues such as the Africa Primary Healthcare Forum, where the Foundation led discussions on public-private partnerships for sustainable health systems, sharing lessons from our ADHFP implementation to inform broader policy and investment decisions across the continent.

  • To deepen local capacity and evidence use, we supported research, knowledge sharing, and health workforce engagement, anchoring our practice in data and best practices that help improve outcomes for communities with limited access to quality care.
