Line Managers’ Workshop: Building Effective Socialisation Systems
How do you turn new civil servants into effective change makers? Discover how our recent workshop with OHCSF is equipping public service HR leaders to reshape Nigeria’s Civil Service from the inside out.
As part of our drive to support stronger public sector leadership, we partnered with the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF) to host a two-day workshop for Directors of Human Resource Departments across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), along with staff from the Employee Mobility Department. The workshop provided HR leaders with practical strategies to improve onboarding, supervision, and talent management in Nigeria’s Civil Service.
The workshop was informed by a 2023 research study we conducted with Dr. Aung Hein, Assistant Professor in Public Policy, at Durham University, which highlighted the key role line managers play in shaping the experiences and career progression of new civil servants. Line managers influence performance through job assignments, supervision, and feedback, making their leadership vital for effective workforce integration.
During the workshop, HR Directors were guided on designing onboarding systems that combine technical skills with values-based learning. By strengthening the capacity of HR leaders in this way, the workshop supports a Civil Service culture that values effective supervision, continuous learning, and sustained institutional performance.
