Rewards and Recognition Trainings: Strengthening Capacity for Effective Rewards Recognition

We are equipping the teams behind the Federal Civil Service Rewards and Recognition Programme with the skills to strengthen performance and accountability.

The Rewards and Recognition Programme is a central pillar of the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan, created to build a culture where excellence, merit, and professionalism are clearly valued. Recognising outstanding performance is not only motivating for staff, it also strengthens accountability and helps the Civil Service deliver better results for citizens.

To support the effective rollout of the programme, we launched a series of capacity-building sessions for the teams responsible for managing and implementing the R&R framework across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies. The first session began with the Employee and Industrial Relations Department, whose role is critical to ensuring that recognition processes are fair, transparent, and aligned with service-wide standards.

The training deepened participants’ understanding of the R&R guidelines and strengthened their ability to design and deliver recognition activities that are meaningful and credible. Through practical discussions and scenario-based learning, participants explored how to implement the framework consistently, how to avoid common challenges, and how to ensure that recognition truly reflects performance and contribution.

This intervention responds directly to the findings of the Federal Civil Service Award and Recognition Impact Report, which highlighted gaps in awareness, guidance, and communication across MDAs. By equipping the implementing teams with the right knowledge, the training aims to close these gaps and support a stronger, more coherent approach to recognition across the Service.

Through this ongoing effort, we aim to build a Civil Service where excellence is not only encouraged but actively celebrated, creating an environment that motivates staff, strengthens performance, and delivers better outcomes for Nigeria.
