Driving Ethical Leadership and Strategic Communication for Public Sector Reform

“I recognised that I needed professional leadership training that promotes integrity, transparency, and accountability.  The AIG PLP’s comprehensive approach to leadership development equipped me with the knowledge and expertise to tackle new challenges and contribute more effectively to my organization's goals.” - Oyebola Oyewo, Deputy Director, Public Affairs Department, Nigerian Copyright Commission, Abuja.

Oyebola Oyewo is the Deputy Director, Public Affairs Department of the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), Abuja.

While working in her role as Assistant Director at the Nigerian Copyright Commission, Oyebola Oyewo recognised the need for professional leadership training rooted in integrity, transparency, and accountability. “I wanted to strengthen my strategic thinking and leadership capabilities, especially in a way that aligns with ethical governance and best practices,” she said. Drawn by the programme’s emphasis on ethical governance, leadership and access to a strong network across Africa, she applied for the AIG Public Leaders Programme.

She affirms that her participation in the programme has equipped her with essential leadership skills, improved her perspective of governance, and deepened her commitment to positive change within the NCC and beyond.

“The programme refined my leadership skills, streamlined my strategic thinking and problem-solving skills and expanded my professional network. My experience in the programme has reinforced my commitment to driving positive change in the public service, and I am confident that the skills and knowledge acquired will continue to benefit the NCC and the nation.”

Speaking about her reform project, she shares how she leveraged strategic communications to enhance understanding and promote a culture of respect for copyright among Nigerian youths. Her project focused on designing public enlightenment initiatives to raise awareness and promote understanding of copyright, especially among young Nigerians.

To raise awareness about copyright in Nigeria, she produced a copyright public service announcement in partnership with MultiChoice Nigeria, conducted copyright advocacy outreaches in major television stations and launched the NCC’s Wall of Fame to celebrate creators. She also introduced a weekly “Awareness Monday” campaign on the NCC’s social media platforms and designed two handbooks to spread knowledge.

These efforts led to increased public engagement and visibility for the Commission’s work. Her project not only reinforced the Commission’s mandate but also positioned copyright education as a national conversation.

The impact of the AIG Public leaders Programme cuts across different sectors. Leveraging insights from the programme, Oyebola Oyewo’s copyright awareness campaign has helped educated millions of Nigerians about intellectual property rights.
